Theatres
The Chronicles of Henry of Livonia record the first theatre performance in 1205. It was organised by the Germanic priest in hope of spreading Christianity. A German Theatre troupe was founded in 1782 and a first Theatre was built in 1863. The first Latvian Theatre performance took place in 1868.  
Latvian National Opera House
 The history surrounding the National Opera is more than 250 years long. During the period of time from 1837 to 1839 Richard Wagner was the chapel-master of Riga, and was involved in opera life. The current theatre  was built as a national theatre in 1863, on the site of an old German theatre. After a fire in 1882, the theatre was rebuilt to its current state. The theatre become the National Opera House in 1919, and the National Theatre moved elsewhere.
Tours are available in English and provide an interesting mix of history and on a performance night, glimpses of actors preparing backstage.

The National Theatre

National Theatre has two stages – the main Stage with 780 seats and its Actor’s Hall Stage, where the performing area can be configured in various ways. The Actor’s Hall seats up to 100 people.The Latvian National Theatre is a repertory theatre, and as the national theatre of Latvia it tends to the development of original Latvian playwriting.
 
Dailes Theater
This modern Latvian theatre offers exceptional dramatic performances, primarily in the Latvian language, though occasionally in Russian as well.

Russian Drama Theatre
Latvia houses the world’s oldest Russian theatre outside of Russia, and the theatre is more than 120 years old, with a rich tradition of acclaimed theatrical performances and celebrity.
Latvian Puppet Theatre
 
Latvia Puppet theatre encourages the formation of educated, creative and unified society by offering varied and contemporary repertory for children, youth and adults. Using both, traditional and innovative puppetry methods, Latvia Puppet theatre ensures preservation of puppetry traditions and promotes its development.

The Dome Cathedral
The Dome Cathedral’s organ is one of the largest organs in the world and has excellent acoustics. International organ music festivals and foreign musicians’ guest appearances take place regularly.For many centuries now, Riga Cathedral has been one of the major venues of music events and concerts in Riga and Latvia. Today you can listen to music of different ages and epochs performed at Riga Cathedral .
The prospect shows just a small part of the 6768 organ pipes. The rest, of different size and different shape, cannot be seen but can be heard. Grouped in 124 stops, and arranged in rows on wind-chest the pipes create the rich colour palette of the romantic organ. The timbral colours of that singing rainbow are most different - bright and softened, tender and harsh, silvery and velvety.
The Great Guild
It's the home to the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Richard Wagner Hall
The German composer Richard Wagner directed the orchestra at this historical concert hall from 1837 to 1839. It was here that his "Flying Dutchman" was first performed. Since its renovation in 1988, the hall is once again regularly used to stage classical music concerts

House of Blackheads
The House of Blackheads was one of the most popular Riga attractions during the middle ages. During World War II it was nearly completely destroyed but has since been completely reconstructed.
Today, The House of Blackheads has been transformed into a museum and concert hall

Cinema
The first movie was shown in Latvia in 1896. The first documentary was filmed in 1910 when cameraman a. Stranke filmed the unveiling of the monument to Peter I. The first movies using actors were filmed in 1913-1914 and the first full-lenght movie was made in 1920.
Kino Citadele

Kino Citadele was the first multiplex film theatre in Latvia and is still one of the largest and most contemporary film theatres in the Eastern Europe. Six floors of the film theatre hold 14 auditoriums.  Auditorium 1 has the largest screen in the Northern Europe ( 24.20 m wide and 10 m high).
